- FAQ
The GP Rating (Deck & Engine) course is a pre-sea training program designed for candidates who wish to start their career in the Merchant Navy. GP Rating stands for General Purpose Rating, which includes training in both Deck Department and Engine Department operations. This course prepares students to work as crew members on merchant ships involved in international trade and shipping.
At Career IQ Institute, the program provides comprehensive training in deck duties such as seamanship, cargo handling, mooring operations, watchkeeping assistance, and safety procedures, along with engine room training including machinery maintenance, engine operations, welding, fitting, and basic electrical work. The course follows maritime safety standards and prepares candidates for life at sea.
Practical training is the backbone of the GP Rating program. Students undergo hands-on workshops, shipboard drills, fire-fighting training, survival techniques, and engine room practice. Emphasis is placed on discipline, teamwork, physical fitness, and adherence to maritime rules and regulations.
After completing the GP Rating (Deck & Engine) course and required sea service, candidates can work onboard ships as Deck Rating or Engine Rating, with opportunities to progress to higher ranks through further certification and experience.
